Message from the General Chair

Welcome to COMNETS 2008, the 3rd International Workshop on Wireless Community Networks, in Hangzhou, China!

Similarly to its predecessors, COMNETS 2008 focuses on wireless community networks and integrates the main aspects of planning, design, implementation and operation of community networks as well as the related socio-technical issues. Community networks or CNs (often referred to as wireless cities or regions, digital cities, digital communities, etc.) have evolved from the concept of freenets or civic nets during the last decade. CNs represent a substantial divergence from the classical telecommunication infrastructures, service provisioning methods and business models because they are often created, owned and operated with the participation of local or regional governments. However, the successful implementation of community networks requires a strong inter-disciplinary knowledge, thus understanding and investigating the intersection of communication technologies, computer science, economic and social aspects.

COMNETS 2008 provides an exciting technical program including 11 papers divided into 3 technical sessions, a keynote address and a mini tutorial. We have received 21 valid paper submissions from 10 countries worldwide. Each submitted paper passed through a thorough review process, handled by an international technical program committee. Based on the reviews, we decided to accept 9 regular papers resulting in an average acceptance rate about 42%. Moreover, the main program also includes 2 invited papers, a keynote address given by Prof. Dr. Honggang Zhang from Zhejiang University, and a mini tutorial about the fundamentals of wireless community networks presented by Prof. Dr. Csaba Szabó and Dr. Károly Farkas from Budapest University of Technology and Economics.

We would like to thank all the organization committee members for their support of organizing such an interesting technical program. Particularly, we are thankful to Prof. Dr. Imrich Chlamtac and Prof. Dr. Csaba Szabó for their guidance and support. We also greatly appreciate the efforts of the TPC members to provide timely and high-quality reviews.

We hope that you will enjoy the event and benefit of the intellectual and social opportunities it offers. Welcome to the 3rd COMNETS!
